Part of the team went to Boston to present our work at the 243rd Electrochemical Society Meeting. Josh Chamberland gave a presentation titled “Optimized Graphene Hydrogels for Electrochemical Applications from High-Concentration GO/GNP Dispersions“. Andrew Sellathurai had a poster on “Investigation of Reduced Graphene Oxide Modified Zinc Anodes Using Various Electrochemical Techniques” and Dominik Barz gave a talk of Hoang Dang’s work on “An Ion Exchange Membrane-Free, Ultrastable Zinc-Iodine Battery Enabled by Functionalized Graphene Electrodes“. Our work was well received and we got valuable insights into the present research of the electrochemical community.
Talk at Ohio State University
Dominik was invited to present in the Seminar Series of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, US. The title of the talk was “Graphene-based Nanomaterials for Application in Batteries and Supercapacitors”
Dominik receives the 2022 Queen’s University Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Research Excellence Award
The award recognizes outstanding contributions by faculty members to the research environment in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (FEAS) at Queen’s University. Winners of the award receive a grant of $10,000 to be used to support their research. The award is intended to reward faculty for their research leadership and for fostering collaborative growth at the graduate level within FEAS.
New article published in Energy Storage Materials
Congratulations to former Postdoc Dr. Hoang Dang and PhD student Andrew Sellathurai for publishing their work in Energy Storage Materials. The paper is about a novel design for Zinc Iodine batteries where we functionalize anode and cathode with graphene. Our battery does not need an ion exchange membrane yet we achieve long term stability with a 3% capacity loss over 2000 cycles.

Invitation as keynote speaker
Dominik was invited as the keynote speaker for the AIST – Association for Iron & Steel Technology Northern Chapter Dinner Meeting last Thursday. The title of the talk was Grey, Blue, Green, Purple… The many colours of hydrogen” and sparked much interest.
New article published in Chemical Engineering Journal
Congratulations to PhD student Andrew Sellathurai and former PhD student Sreeman Mypati, Ph.D. for their new article published in Chemical Engineering Journal. Drew and Sreeman found out that graphene oxide is a superior stabilizer for the liquid phase exfoliation of graphite to graphene in water. They achieved yields of more than 20% which is considerably higher than previously reported. The product can be directly used for printing or synthesis of supercapacitor electrodes.

Dominik gave an invited presentation on “Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry for the characterization of supercapacitors” at the 64th International Conference on Analytical Sciences and Spectroscopy (64th ICASS), Kingston, August 8-10, 2022.

Talk at Center for Mass Spectroscopy and Optical Spectroscopy
Dominik Barz gave a talk entitled “2D Graphene Nanomaterials: Stable Aqueous Dispersions and their Application for Energy Storage Devices” at the Professor Raedle’s Center for Mass Spectroscopy and Optical Spectroscopy, Mannheim University, Germany. CeMOS is the largest research institute at a University of Applied Science in the province of Baden Wuertemberg.
Talk at Leibniz Institute for New Materials
Dominik Barz was the first in-person seminar speaker at Professor Presser’s Leibniz Institute for New Materials (INM) in Saarbruecken, Germany since the beginning of the pandemic. His talk was entitled “2D Graphene Nanomaterials: Stable Aqueous Dispersions and their Application for Energy Storage Devices”. This visit laid out the foundation for a future collaboration on capacitive deionization materials.
